Let There Be Light(LTBL) is a script that I wrote to quickly create three point lighting setups for maya. It is one of the first scripts I ever wrote, and I still find use for it.
The concept was born because I got tired of tweaking lighting setups for quick renders of models. I wanted to get a preview of models I was working on in decent lighting conditions, but didn’t want to spend ages fine tuning the lights to get the effect I wanted.
LTBL has a GUI for specifying the angles and colour of the lights you create, and comes with a default layout that I am happy with. With one button, LTBL creates a key light, a fill light and a rim light, at angles relative to the camera. It creates soft shadows for the fill light and tweaks attributes for all three to get a result that looks good. All you need to do is position the camera how you want, and click “Create lights”.
I believe this concept has some room for expansion, and I may revisit it in the future.
